Nine Department of Medicine faculty elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences

Nine faculty members from the Department of Medicine have been named fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS), one of the country’s highest honours in the health sciences community.

The fellows are among 74 individuals from a wide range of fields who have been recognized by their peers nationally and internationally for their leadership, creativity and commitment to advance academic health science.

Dr. Gillian Booth is a Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology & Metabolism) and a Canada Research Chair. She is an internationally recognized researcher who investigates and designs evidence-based solutions to address the social, environmental, and healthcare factors behind the diabetes epidemic.

Dr. Cathy Craven is a Senior Scientist at the KITE Research Institute within University Health Network and a Professor of Medicine (Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) at the University of Toronto. She is an internationally recognized as leader in spinal cord injury rehabilitation, medical rehabilitation of sublesional osteoporosis, and health services research.

Dr. Margaret Herridge is a Professor at the University of Toronto and a Senior Scientist and Respiratory/Critical Care Physician at the University Health Network. An international leader in patient and family caregiver outcomes after critical illness, she currently leads the national RECOVER Program.

Dr. Mansoor Husain is a leading clinician-scientist whose research is focused on uncovering the pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate human cardiovascular disease.

Dr. David Jenkins is a University Professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto and, a Staff Physician in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center and Scientist, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, Unity Health Toronto. He researches dietary prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer

Dr. Amit Oza is head of the Division of Medical Oncology & Hematology and Director of Clinical Research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He has dedicated his clinical and research activities to women diagnosed with gynaecologic cancers.

Dr. Vincent Piguet is Department Division Director, Dermatology, and Professor of Medicine. He is an internationally recognized clinician scientist and dermatologist focusing on skin immunology and infection.

Dr. Aaron Schimmer is Director of Research, Senior Scientist and Staff Physician at the Princess Margaret Cancer, University Health Network and Professor of Medicine and Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. As a Past President of the Canadian Hematology Society, he is an international authority in translational cancer research focused on blood cancers known as leukemia.

Dr. Sharon Walmsley is a trailblazer in HIV and AIDS research and treatment in Canada. For more than three decades she has been at the forefront of advances in health care and initiatives to overcome the epidemic. Dr. Walmsley spearheaded early developments on opportunistic infections and antiretroviral therapy, and she is now a world leader in research on aging with HIV and long-term care.
