The above individuals have been awarded an MD Program Teaching Award of Excellence for the 2019-20 academic year. This award is an initiative introduced by the University of Toronto medical students recognizing faculty in the MD Program who have attained Teaching Evaluation Scores in the top 10% in one or more of the teaching activities to which they have contributed.

Canadian Skin Patient Alliance, Dermatologist of the Year
Dr. Raed Alhusayen was recently awarded the 2020 Dermatologist of the Year by the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance for his work in hidradenitis suppurativa and his tireless advocacy for patients with this condition. This “Derm of the Year” award is the highest honour bestowed by the CSPA on one exceptional dermatologist each year.

Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Spring 2020 Competition
Dr. An-Wen Chan's project "Patterns of care and outcomes for localized melanoma: Population-based cohort study" has been awarded CIHR grant funding in the Spring 2020 competition. The project was ranked 2nd of 43 applications to the health services research panel - congratulations to Dr. Chan and the co-investigators!
 

David Croitoru

European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV), Imrich Sarkany Non-European Memorial Scholarship
Dr. David Croitoru has been awarded the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Imrich Sarkany Non-European Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to only twelve young dermato-venereologists from non-European countries each year.

 

Jorge-Ryan Georgakopoulos

PGY3, Dermatology, University of Toronto

University of Toronto, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, 2020-2021 Postgraduate Research Awards
Dr. Georgakopoulos has been awarded the Chisholm Memorial Fund and William S. Fenwick Research Fellowship by the Postgraduate Awards Committee at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, in support of his research exploring the long-term efficacy and safety of dupilumab in treating atopic dermatitis and prurigo nodularis. His research group aimed to report the incidence, characteristics and long-term treatment outcomes of dupilumab induced ocular surface disease. The Division of Dermatoogy is one of the largest prescribers of biologic agents in Canada. As such, these findings represent that largest cohort of real-world patients on dupilumab reported to date.

International Federation of Psoriasis Associations, Best Young Researcher Award
Congratulations to Dr. Jorge-Ryan Georgakopoulos on also being awarded the Best Young Researcher award by the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations at the World Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis Conference. This award is given to one resident or early career researcher at the IFPA international conference held once every three years.
 

Malika Ladha

Laser Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology Fellow, University of Toronto

International Conference on Residency Education, 2021 Kristin Sivertz Resident Leadership Award
Dr. Malika Ladha is the 2021 recipient of the Kristin Sivertz Resident Leadership Award from the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE). The award recognizes Dr. Ladha's leadership in resident education, prolific scholarship, and her compassion and commitment to mentorship. She has earned a reputation as an innovative and creative leader whose work continues to have profound effects at the local and national levels in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.
 

Asfandyar Mufti

Women's College Hospital, F.M. Hill Mentoring Award
Congratulations Dr. Asfandyar Mufti, who won the F.M. Hill Mentoring Award for his outstanding achievements in mentorship. This award recognizes senior trainees who demonstrate teaching excellence, who educate, advise and guide the training of junior physicians-in-training, have a positive impact on trainee morale, and who demonstrate outstanding human qualities.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, 2020 Continuing Education Award
Dr. Kucy Pon has been chosen as the recipient of the SHSC Department of Medicine Continuing Education Award for 2020. The Division of Dermatology is grateful for Dr. Pon's dedication to teaching at all levels, from pre-clerkship through to continuing education, and in particular her creativity in designing educational activities. Thank you for your ongoing support of the educational mission of the Department of Medicine.

Canadian Dermatology Association Resident and Fellow Society (CDA-RFS), 2021 Faculty Clinical Teaching Award
Dr. Pon has also been awarded the CDA-RFS Faculty Clinical Teaching Award, a national award that is given annually to only two Canadian dermatology faculty clinical teachers who have made outstanding contribution to resident teaching and have inspired and mentored residents in their programs.
 

Scott Walsh

University of Toronto, 2019/2020 Postgraduate Medical Education Award
Dr. Scott Walsh has been recognized with an 'Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education Award: Teaching Performance, Mentorship and Advocacy'. This award,  established in 2003, recognizes outstanding contributions of faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. The award may acknowledge continuous or long- term excellence in instruction, career counseling, promotion of collegiality, or role modeling for postgraduate trainees.
