Title: "Blood-brain barrier opening using MR-guided focused ultrasound in neurological diseases"
Learning objectives:
- To describe the MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) platform and the Sunnybrook MRgFUS Program
- To review MRgFUS blood-brain barrier opening trials for neurological diseases
- To describe future steps in the validation of MRgFUS as a therapeutic delivery platform to the brain
Blurb:
Transcranial MRgFUS has been approved as a therapeutic alternative for refractory essential tremor. This non-invasive technique has now being tested as a drug delivery platform in ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and brain tumours by safely and temporarily opening the blood-brain barrier in targeted brain regions.
