Position Opening: Master Teacher Program Co-Director

Sep 13, 2017

Co-Director, Department of Medicine Master Teacher Program

Overview:
Faculty Development is a vital function of the Department of Medicine. The Master Teacher
Program (MTP)
serves to improve faculty teaching skills with a focus on junior faculty members
and Clinician Teachers in the Department of Medicine at University of Toronto. It is a two-year
course which runs from September to May for half a day weekly. It is directed toward busy
clinician teachers and offers both instruction in educational theory as well as in practical teaching
skills and with experiential practica. It runs two concurrent cohorts on separate afternoons, Monday
and Wednesday from 1pm-4:30pm, with a maximum of 14 participants per cohort in order to allow
for small group interactivity and role play. Work on a scholarly project comprises a significant
portion of the second year, which should result in an educational deliverable. A certificate is presented
at the conclusion of the course that can contribute to meeting the requirements of advanced
training necessary for appointment to the faculty of the Department of Medicine at University of
Toronto.

Role:
The Co-Directors of the MTP design and facilitate the course. The curriculum was created by the
course directors and is extensively updated every year. Course Directors must have demonstrated
an interest in health professions education and must be conversant in major topics and trends in
teaching and education in Medicine. Visiting speakers are invited by the course directors. The
course runs from September to May a half day weekly on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for
each cohort, and two cohorts run concurrently, so approximately 70 half-day sessions are led yearly
by the course directors. Preparation of the materials is required for each half day of teaching. The
Course directors attend all sessions, facilitate the discussions, provide educational theory and
expertise, present the didactic materials, provide support for the projects leading to educational
deliverables, continually update the curriculum, and evaluate the program. They also advise on the
design and updating of the informational website, provide information and career counseling to
prospective applicants, and mentor current course participants and some alumni participants.
Course directors review all application materials and select the participants for each cohort on an
annual basis.

Course directors are active and represent the Department in the wider faculty development
community at the local and hospital level, at the Faculty of Medicine’s Centre for Faculty
Development, and regionally by giving presentations regularly beyond the University of Toronto.
They also participate in scholarship in Faculty Development that is presented regularly at national
and international Medical Education meetings. Both directors sit on the Education Executive
Board for the Department of Medicine.
