Internal Grant Review Service

This collegial, constructive and non-consequential internal grant review service is provided to improve grant writing skills and overall success rates in the Department of Medicine. It is a functional service designed to improve grants for those individuals who want to have their work reviewed while avoiding the pitfall of placing too onerous a task on senior faculty. The service is administered via DDD offices. To allow sufficient review time grants will be submitted 30 days in advance. Two reviewers per grant are recommended and reviewers will be selected by the PI and DDD in consultation with each other.

Eligibility
The Internal Grant Review Service is designed specifically for junior faculty members at the Lecturer and Assistant Professor rank.  Faculty within their first three years of appointment especially are strongly encouraged to use this resource and it will be promoted at the annual Faculty Orientation Event.

Operation

  • Access to the Internal Grant Review Service will be solely through the University Division Director.
  • In consultation with the University Division Director, a primary and a secondary reviewer will be identified and the formal Request for Peer Review checklist will be completed. To be eligible, reviewers must receive both the completed checklist and the research proposal at least one month (30-days) prior to the grant submission deadline.
  • Reviewers will complete the Peer Review Report to provide investigators with their comments and return this and the research proposal to the investigator at least two-weeks (14 days) prior to the grant submission deadline.  Feedback will be based on three pillars:  OK as is; Needs minor revisions; and Needs major revisions.

Funding Agency
National and international peer-reviewed research grants and career/investigator awards (or equivalent based on the discretion of the University Division Director).
