Vacation scheduling

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Each trainee is eligible for 4 weeks vacation (20 working days), 7 days education leave and 2 ‘personal’ days.

Submit a separate vacation request form for each week.

Submit the vacation request form to the administrative office of your base hospital.

Vacations are granted on a ‘first-come first-serve’ basis.  Book vacation as early as possible – the longer you wait the less likely it will be that you will get what you want!

In addition, each trainee is eligible for 5 consecutive days off over Christmas (December 22 - 26, 2006) or New Years (December 28 - January 1, 2007).  To request one of the blocks, complete the vacation request form stating - 'off Christmas block' or 'off New Years block'.  All trainees are expected to be at work for sign-over on December 27th.

If you book vacation the first week of a rotation, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are not on-call the last weekend of your previous rotation.

If there is a specific day you do not want to be on-call, submit the request using the vacation form and under 'other' write in “Not on Call.”  While every attempt will be made to accommodate these requests, they cannot be guaranteed.

If you want to have time off for a religious holiday, it will be considered vacation time unless it falls on a weekend or statutory holiday.  Please submit the request for time off in the same manner that you would submit for vacation time.   Please note that we make every effort to accommodate religious holidays but cannot guarantee that we can grant all requests.

If you are on-call the last day of one rotation, it is your responsibility to inform the next rotation at least 3 weeks prior to the start of that rotation.

It is your responsibility to pick up your on-call schedule.  It is the department’s responsibility to ensure that it is available two weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

Please note that while the PAIRO-CAHO agreement mandates that residents who are 31 or more weeks pregnant are not required to do call, it is the trainee’s responsibility to notify  the call schedule coordinator at the site at which the trainee will be rotating at that time.
