Electives

We have increased the amount of elective time from one month to a potential 5 months in 3 years of training..  Acceptable electives would be:

  • Any chosen from a list of approved selectives (ambulatory medicine, clinical genetics, clinical pharmacology, palliative care, obstetrical medicine, MSH, obstetrical medicine, WCH, occupational medicineHIV, Hypertension selective) (see Curriculum Requirement Table)
  • Proposals for non University of Toronto electives would have to be approved by the program director.  Proposals need to include a letter from the supervisor agreeing to take you and committing to completing an evaluation form (ITER) as well as a two page proposal which lists the location and name of the supervisor, a set of educational objectives and a description of the structure of the elective. . Elective Proposal Example
  • Only one month of elective can be taken in non-medicine related subjects (radiology, psychiatry, etc.)
  • Up to 2 months of research or a quality improvement project can be taken.  Trainees can use one of their 2 elective blocks to do a research or QA project without submitting a proposal.   Otherwise, a proposal is required and for projects greater than one month in length, it is expected that the project will result in presentation at a hospital research day and/or a meeting.  A copy of the abstract or a report must be submitted to the resident’s file
  • Elective requests need to be submitted at least three months prior to the scheduled electives. Requests received after that time as well as incomplete requests will not be considered
