Curriculum Requirements

As per the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), below are the requirements for the successful completion of the Core Internal Medicine Program.

A minimum of 12 months must take place in General Internal Medicine (GIM), either on a General Medicine clinical teaching unit, a General Medicine consultation service, or an Ambulatory Care block rotation. The Core Internal Medicine Program has defined the GIM requirements to mean:
  • Team Medicine: 8-9 months
  • Medical Consults: 1-2 month(s)
  • Community Medicine: 1 month
  • Hospitalist Team: 0-1 month
  • Longitudinal/Ambulatory Clinics (PGY1 and PGY3): 1 month

The remaining 24 months of the Core Internal Medicine Program will be spent on subspecialties. RCPSC stipulates that:

  1. All residents must have a significant experience in the following subspecialty fields:
    1. Critical Care Medicine
    2. Cardiology, including the Coronary Care Unit
  2. All residents should have a significant experience in the following subspecialty fields:
    1. Infectious Diseases
    2. Neurology
    3. Respiratory Medicine
    4. Rheumatology
    5. Endocrinology/Metabolism
    6. Gastroenterology
    7. Geriatric Medicine
    8. Hematology
    9. Medical Oncology
    10. Clinical Allergy & Immunology
    11. Dermatology
    12. Nephrology
