Clinical & Research Fellowship Programs

Physicians who seek training over and above residency training within the same area of their specialization may take additional training as a Clinical Fellow or a Research Fellow.

A Clinical Fellowship is an opportunity for a physician to obtain advanced training and/or to acquire more specialized expertise not normally acquired during residency training. Training may involve both clinical and research activities.  Applicants to Clinical Fellowship training programs in the Department of Medicine must have completed residency training in either the base specialty, base subspecialty, or a complimentary specialty (including Family Medicine if acceptable and if so indicated in the Fellowship eligibility criteria for a given Fellowship) prior to commencing fellowship training in the Department of Medicine.  The individual need not be certified in any specialty prior to commencing the fellowship.

Research Fellows spend 100% of their time in a research experience in a subject related to their specialty.  The minimum requirement is a medical degree from a recognized medical school.

Training as a Clinical or Research Fellow in the Department of Medicine is not accredited nor is it approved as residency training toward certification by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

The Department offers a large number of Clinical and Research Fellowships through its Divisions.  See Applying to our Programs for eligibility requirements.  For additional information and application packages, contact the Postgraduate Fellowship Director for the appropriate specialty or the Residency & Fellowship Postgraduate Education office, Department of Medicine.
