Application to Residency Training for the Subspecialty Programs in Medicine Department of Medicine Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto
Eligible candidates must be registered in their 3rd year of a postgraduate training program in Internal Medicine in Canada or the United States and be either Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents of Canada, or have a pre-approved sponsorship arrangement.

Candidates applying to the Department of Medicine: Please carefully review the applicant category descriptions A, B, C, and D below and identify the correct one for your circumstances.

Candidates applying to Critical Care Medicine and Palliative Medicine: The Departments of Critical Care Medicine and Palliative Medicine are affiliated with the Department of Medicine. Candidates applying to Critical Care Medicine will apply through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Applicants to Palliative Medicine must contact the program directly for program information and eligibility.

A. Canadian & U.S. Medical Graduates
Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents who graduated from a Canadian or American medical school and are currently enrolled in residency training in Internal Medicine will apply for subspecialty residency training through the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). B. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) Training in Canada
IMGs who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and are currently enrolled in residency training in Internal Medicine in Canada will apply for subspecialty residency training through the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). Please see the CaRMS website. |

C. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) Training in the U.S.
IMGs who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents and are currently enrolled in residency training in Internal Medicine in the U.S. will apply for subspecialty residency training through the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). Please see the CaRMS website. |

D. International Visa-Trainees
Visa trainees currently enrolled in residency training in Internal Medicine in Canada who have pre-approved sponsorship* for subspecialty training at the University of Toronto and wish to apply to a program must apply directly to the training program. Applicants must contact the program of interest to determine if there are special requirements concerning the application, relevant deadlines, and for the program’s mailing address. Candidates submitting incomplete applications will not be considered for an interview. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required documents are submitted to the residency training Program Director/ Administrator correctly and by the application deadline. The following documents are required on application:
- Completed Application for Postgraduate Medical Education
- Personal statement of interest (500 word maximum)
- Letters of recommendation (3 minimum to 5 maximum) from faculty, one of which must come from your current Program Director. Letters are to be submitted in sealed envelopes and signed on the flap by the referees
- Completed Declaration form

- C.V. - must include a chronology of training and work experience, including start and end dates accurate to the month
- Copy of Medical Degree
- Copy of MCCEE examination results
- Candidate to bring 1 current photograph of self to the interview ( photo must be passport size )
*Agreements regarding sponsorship must be arranged directly between the sponsoring agency and the Faculty of Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Office (PGMEO) prior to making a formal application to the subspecialty programs. All postgraduate medical appointments involving citizens from, for example, Bahrain, Barbados, Grenada, Kuwait, Libya (CBIE), Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, etc., require appropriate sponsorship authority for subspecialty training at the University of Toronto. A list of the Ontario school contacts and the sponsors with whom they have contracts is available on the PGMEO website. |
