Introduction

The Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, is committed to the career development of Educators within the Department and to supporting training for future Clinician-Educators.  This Program is designed to provide advanced training to post-graduate medical trainees interested in pursuing future academic careers focused on education research and scholarship. Graduates of the Program will be prepared to develop as leaders in the field of Medical Education.

Eligibility

Applicants must be post-graduate trainees at the University of Toronto in entry-level programs of the Department of Medicine (Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Occupational Medicine, Physiatry) or in a Subspecialty Program of Internal Medicine.  Canadian citizens or permanent residents who apply to a clinical training program in the Department of Medicine may apply simultaneously to the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program. (Applications from trainees outside of the University of Toronto may be considered, but only if the candidate has external funding for the two years.)

Applicants must have demonstrated clinical excellence and scholarly achievement throughout their training.  Documentation of teaching skills and accomplishments in medical education through a formal teaching portfolio is required.  Strong support from the trainee’s Clinical Program Director (and Divisional Director, if applicable) is expected.

Entry into Program

Entry into the full-time Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program may occur after satisfactory completion of at least one year of clinical training.  Re-entry into the clinical program, when required, will follow two years of the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program. 

Enrollment in a graduate degree program at the University of Toronto is required by the program committee. In extraordinary circumstances, other training experiences will be considered. 

Entry into the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program is a competitive process. The number of positions available in any year will be dependent on departmental resources.

Education Scholarship

The Program consists of a two-year curriculum that fosters the development of Clinician-Educators who will have a specific focus of expertise and scholarship and the capacity to be successful education researchers. Potential areas for program concentration include, but are not limited to: evaluation of competence, self-assessment, simulation, technical skills expertise, professionalism, inter-professional education, communication, diagnostic reasoning, sociology, and program development and evaluation.

Most of the candidate’s time will be devoted to course work related to the Master’s degree and to at least one major education research project. In addition, the program will provide mentoring and counseling regarding career opportunities as a Clinician-Educator, and opportunities to develop skills in educational leadership and administration. Clinical work is permitted during this time but is limited to allow completion of the Master’s degree. (The specific details may depend on level of training and the clinical program the candidate is enrolled in, and will be worked out at time of acceptance.)

Funding

The Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program provides full funding for two years at the Ministry of Health post-graduate salary level commensurate with the last clinical year of training (up to PGY5), plus benefits and typical University of Toronto graduate tuition fees. All trainees are also required to apply for external awards, such as the Royal College Fellowship for studies in education. Please note that all external award funding contributions to your salary MUST flow through the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine.

Application Process

Interested candidates are strongly urged to contact the Director of the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program well in advance of the application deadline, to discuss the application process, goals and objectives, etc. Application documents, including current curriculum vitae, official transcripts and letters of reference must be received in the Department of Medicine office by October 31st of the year preceding entry into the Program.  The Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program Committee will interview eligible candidates by December 1st.  Successful applicants will be notified within 4 weeks of the interview.

As outlined above, enrolment in a graduate degree at the University of Toronto is required. This is most often undertaken as a Master’s of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT). Please note that this application process is separate from the application to the CETP. Other degrees and programs can be considered, but must be approved by the Program Committee at the time of application to the program.

In addition, candidates should, in most cases, simultaneously apply to the Fellowship Program at the Wilson Centre for Research in Education http://www.thewilsoncentre.ca/Fellowships/About.aspx. Most (but not all) of the trainees in the CETP have also been fellows of the Wilson Centre, and have greatly benefited from the world-class expertise, research mentorship and resources of the Centre. Please note that this application process is separate from the application to the CETP. Acceptance to the WCRE Fellowship is highly dependent on the match between the research interests of the candidate and the availability of appropriate mentorship. Thus interested candidates are required to contact the Director of the WCRE Fellowship Program as well as the Director of the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Educator Training Program well in advance of the October deadline, to discuss goals and objectives, research interests and opportunities, etc.
