Waiver of External Peer Review

Policy & Sample Request

A waiver of external peer-review is only applicable to clinical faculty being considered for promotion on the basis of sustained excellence in teaching to the rank of Associate and Full Professor.  A waiver of external peer-review recognizes the fact that clinical faculty spend a large portion of their time in clinical work and teaching as opposed to scholarship.  Candidates are responsible for requesting a waiver of external peer-review in the form of a letter and a current curriculum vitae to the Dean, c/o the Chair of the Department of Medicine (listed on the contact page) before the established deadline (see deadline table).

A waiver of external peer-review will not be given to a candidate being recommended for promotion to the ranks of Associate and Full Professor where scholarship as defined in either research or creative professional activity is the main criteria of the promotion.  In the absence of external references, the Decanal Promotions Committee finds it difficult to assess how a candidate’s contributions are perceived at the national level.

The letter should be addressed to the Dean, Faculty of Medicine care of the Chair, Department of Medicine.

Request for Waiver of External Review

I am writing to request waiver of external review of my candidacy for promotion to (Associate Professor/ Full Professor).  I understand that with such a waiver I may be considered for promotion only on the basis of sustained excellence in teaching over a period of several years and not on the basis of research or creative professional activity.

This request is based on the fact that because my teaching has been focused at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I have not had an opportunity to develop a sufficient provincial or national teaching status that can be drawn upon for external review.

I am enclosing a copy of my curriculum vitae to aid your assessment of my teaching.
