Learning Objectives
• Recognize the pleasures, but also the challenges
inherent in pursuing lifelong learning
• Discuss how reflection-on-practice can and must
contribute to lifelong learning, but also how difficult it is
• Think about personal commitment to lifelong learning
Lifelong learning is a corner stone of maintenance of
competence for health professionals. And while there are
many benefits of continuing to learn throughout one’s life,
there are also many barriers. Among these are: lack of
development of skills of self-directed learning during
undergraduate and postgraduate training; the difficulties
inherent in undertaking a self assessment; and competing
demands of practice settings that make it difficult to
prioritize learning. These rounds explore the paradox of
self-directed, lifelong learning – we know it is essential to
our professional autonomy and continuing competence, yet
most of us have no idea how to do it or how to teach it.
