McLaughlin Lecture Theatre, Room EG-61 Therapeutic Implications of Sleep Apnea in Heart Failure: Development of the Multi-National ADVENT-HF Trial T. Douglas Bradley, MD, FRCPC Director, Cardiopulmonary Sleep Disorders & Research Centre, UHN-TGH Director, Sleep Research Laboratory, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Director, Centre for Sleep Medicine & Circadian Biology, Departmental Division Director & Professor of Medicine, Division of Respirology, University of Toronto OBJECTIVES At the end of this presentation participants should be able to: 1. Identify mechanisms through which sleep apnea has an adverse impact on cardiovascular function. 2. Describe how both obstructive and central sleep apnea (OSA & SCA, respectively) have adverse effects on mortality in patients with heart failure. 3. Understand how treating OSA & CSA improves cardiovascular function in patients with heart failure. 4. Appraise the rationale for undertaking a randomized trial of treating OSA & CSA in heart failure patients to determine its effects on morbidity & mortality.
