January 15, 2007 Dear Colleagues, Our medical students are engaged in a very worthwhile volunteer activity that you may have read about in the lay press: "Books with Wings". Please see the message attached from 2 of our medical students, Tasha and Rubini. Your assistance would be most gratefully appreciated. Regards,
Books with Wings is a student initiated effort to collect and ship textbooks, and provide funding for teaching models, and lab equipment to fellow Afghan students. Last year, over 1100 books were collected for Herat University in Afganistan. This year, our goal is to collect even more books and donations for Nangarhar University, Afghanistan. The Books with Wings project was established in 2003 by the University of Toronto Medical Society and is supported by UTIHP (University of Toronto Health Program), Uof T Faculty of Medicine and the Centre for International Health. It has also garnered the support of the Canadian Armed Forces in the form of transportation of all the supplies. Itis an official project of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS), and effortsare being made to initiate similar projects nationwide. We would appreciate it if you would consider donating textbooks published in the last 10 years: medical and nursing textbooks, basic science textbooks, allied health textbooks, and engineering textbooks are welcome! Monetary donations for shelving, equipment, teaching models are also appreciated. Books can be dropped off at: --Medical Sciences Building, Office of Student Affairs, Room 2171 Alternatively, book pick-ups can be arranged -- please contact us via e-mail. In previous years, donations from the U of T community have greatly influenced the quality of education for students in Afganistan, as has been shown by the many letters of appreciation that Books with Wings has received from Afghan students. Your support in this worthy project would be greatly appreciated. Rubini Pathy and Tasha Jeyanathan Contact information: Last updated:2/6/2007 4:15:38 PM
