Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation & Exchange

Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation & Exchange in the Department of Medicine is designed to foster life long learning and the maintenance of professional competence.  The Department of Medicine Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation & Exchange Task Force has representation from all subspecialty divisions, hospital-based Medical Grand Rounds, and consultants and links to the Faculty of Medicine Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development.

Our activities fulfil the requirements of the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) of the Royal College of Physicians of Surgeons of Canada.  This program has six sections and each practitioner must accumulate 80 credits annually (400 credits per five year cycle).  The first section is accredited group learning activities.  The Department of Medicine has more than 70 regularly scheduled accredited educational rounds.   The process of designing educationally sound activities is summarized in our handbook, "Planning Group Continuing Education for Maintenance of Certification."

We are also fostering the development of continuing professional development through personal learning projects (section 4 - MOC) and practice review and appraisal (section 5 - MOC).

Our continuing education programs are renouned around the world.  Other activities are accredited through the Faculty of Medicine Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development and Guidelines Advisory Committee, an independent partnership of the Ontario Medical Association and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Successful outcomes can be enhanced if the patient is part of the process.

Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation & Exchange Task Force

The Department of Medicine CE & KTE Task Force is organized with a chair who is the Director of Continuing Education and Knowledge Translation & Exchange for the Department.  The chair is part of the Executive and Education Committees of the Department of Medicine and represents the Department on the Faculty Continuing Education and Professional Development Committee.  Each of the 18 Divisions has a representative on the Task Force as do each of the Medical Grand Rounds at each fully-affiliated hospital.  The Divisional representatives are, in general, part of the Executive Committee in their Division.

This Task Force is responsible for interpreting the Maintenance of Certification Program in the Department as well as fostering continuing education research, innovation, and scholarship.
